Do You Really Need an Annual Hearing Test?

Have you started to notice changes to your hearing? This could include turning the volume up to a louder point on tech devices so that you can hear it more clearly. Or you could find that you are having issues with hearing every word in a conversation when someone is talking to you. If this is the case, then you may want to arrange a hearing test.

It’s possible that you are wondering how regularly you should have a hearing test. Some people recommend that you do complete a hearing test on an annual basis. But is this necessary?

If You’re Over 60

If you are over the age of 60, then you should be getting an annual hearing test. Those who are over this age are at increased risk of experiencing hearing loss and should be checked on a regular basis. This is true whether you are currently experiencing symptoms or not.

This demographic is at risk of far more medical conditions, and you want to preserve your hearing health for as long as possible, right? If you get an annual hearing test, you will be able to know if there are any changes before, they become problems. This way, there might be a way for you to take action and stop the hearing loss from getting any worse!

Under 60

If you are under 60 and you are not experiencing any kind of symptoms that indicate you are experiencing hearing loss, then there is no need for an annual hearing test. That’s not to say that you should never get a hearing test though, as you should in some circumstances. If you are ever in doubt, then speak to a hearing instrument specialist as they will give you the advice that you need.

When to Get a Hearing Test

So, when do you need to get a hearing test? We already mentioned that those over the age of 60 should be having one annually, but for those below 60 you should only have a hearing test if you think that you need one. If you are experiencing some of the common signs of hearing loss for example, this is an indication that you need to be speaking to a hearing instrument specialist and having a hearing test conducted. Keep in mind that just because hearing loss is less common in those under the age of 60, doesn’t mean that it can’t occur.

Symptoms of Hearing Loss

There are various symptoms of hearing loss. The most common symptom is a significant change to your hearing. However, changes to your ear can also cause balance issues. This might mean that you are at greater risk of falling over particularly as you age. This is one of the reasons why you should make sure that you arrange to get a hearing test on a regular basis.

It’s common for those people who are experiencing hearing loss to also experience tinnitus. While tinnitus is technically a type of hearing loss, it is also noted as a symptom. This is a constant, whistling, buzzing or ringing in your ears. Some people experience temporary tinnitus after they have been exposed to loud noises over time such as if they have been to a music concert or standing by a heavy power tool without ear protection.

It’s worth noting at this point that hearing loss isn’t always due to a permanent change and it may not be related to damage to your ears or age. Hearing loss can be caused by the buildup of earwax or it might be related to a neurological condition. This is why it’s important to make sure that you do get your hearing checked regularly. It won’t just reveal if you have hearing loss. It can point to what the issue is and whether it requires treatment. For instance, a hearing instrument specialist may recommend earwax removal.
